Tech

When we talk about the term “Virtual Reality”, we often think of Science fiction films. This technology has completely blended into our daily lives. It is here to stay. But what exactly is it?

WHAT IS VIRTUAL REALITY?

Virtual Reality has experienced significant growth in the past few years. This technology has changed our lives, our social interaction, and the way we work. VR is a wholly engaging computer-generated world that provides us with a real-world view with mesmerizing advancements.

Virtual Reality has been widely recognized following the growing adoption of the technology in the past few years. Several players have emerged in the market intending to navigate VR as a mainstream option. In addition, the launch of commercial virtual reality headsets has sped up the market growth and helped in gaining investments by big companies such as Google. Some of the most popular VR headsets are Google Daydream and Samsung Gear VR.

Virtual reality is not just a technology that is designed for creating an illusion of an alternative world, it creates a life-like reality. VR is one of the most rapidly emerging technologies. Its application involves wearing a headset that creates a 360-degree simulation. Some of the major contributions of VR to different sectors are listed below:

  • EDUCATION

Education is getting more expensive over time. With new VR technology, schools and other educational institutions will be able to cut back on their costs and give their employees the best training without imposing any potential risk. For example, the U.S. army has started using Microsoft HoloLens technology to offer soldiers real-time environment updates.

  • HEALTHCARE

VR is becoming a powerful diagnostic tool helping doctors to carry out accurate diagnoses of patients. Doctors perform Robotic Surgery using a robotic device i.e. robotic arm controlled by a human surgeon, to minimize the risks of complications during surgery and ensure a faster recovery. VR is also used to curb memory loss, gather relevant data for dementia research, and help autistic children.

  • GAMING

With advancements, the gaming sector is in demand right now. VR is bringing a revolution in the gaming world. VR in gaming means creating virtual reality environments with VR software and presenting to the user in such a way that they supersede the real-world environment. In simple terms, a VR game involves a 3D image that is explored interactively by the user on a computing device by manipulating mouse, keys, or touchscreen.

  • TRAVEL

VR offers technology that lets its users travel the world even by being at home. By just playing a video, users can travel to any of their favorite destinations without even moving from their current location. Moreover, it also allows its users to have a street view, take a look at the venues and restaurants nearby their destination by just sitting in the room.

  • SOCIALIZING

There is a wide range of VR-based social platforms that allow people to meet up and chat or play in virtual environments, it doesn’t matter if they know each other beforehand or not. It provides virtual platforms like VR Chat, AltspaceVR, and Rec Room.

For example, Facebook launched its Horizon platform. This currently allows people to make and share online phenomenon where they can hang out, play games, or work together on collaborative projects.

VR AND AI

VR is incomplete without Artificial Intelligence, this duo has the caliber to completely gentrify the world. Both of them are at their initial stages and have only made small appearances here and there. For example, the features available on social media applications like Instagram and Snapchat are a combination of both Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality.

Joining AI and VR can provide exciting incredible opportunities. In the travel industry, VR can help tourists see what’s to come when they book a place in a resort while AI software can take care of the actual bookings. In the shopping industry, VR lets consumers try products in a virtual environment before making a purchase. Virtual shopping is indeed exciting and AI comes in the limelight to enhance the experience even more. For example, a customer interested in buying a chair can use VR to test it out while AI can introduce a virtual sales executive who can answer queries, and complete the sale.

TO SUMMARIZE

While in the real world it always takes time to meet up with friends, VR has eliminated that possibility in its created virtual world. And as our working and school life is getting confined at home due to the pandemic, it appears that more of our social interaction will likely move into the online realm, too. We are no longer restricted to boundaries of four walls for careers or educational opportunities due to an increasingly virtualized world. And with the rate this technology is developing, we will surely have more meaningful ways to connect with other humans in the future.
